Hohenwald holds a great deal of historical interest because of its proximity to the famous Natchez Trace. Stretching between Nashville and Natchez, Mississippi, the trace had been used as an Indian trail for centuries and became the preferred route of Kentucky boatmen returning from New Orleans.
In 1802 the famed explorer Meriwether Lewis was found dead at Grinder's Inn on the Natchez Trace, near the site of present-day Hohenwald.

Lewis had been traveling to Washington on unknown business and the circumstances of his death have never been explained. In 1925, this site was made into Lewis State Forest, complete with campgrounds, picnic area and foot trails. Each October a two-day Arts & Crafts Fair is held, an event that has grown steadily from year to year.

The Natchez Trace Parkway, established in 1938, roughly bisects the Hohenwald area, following the course of the original trail and preserving its beauty and historic integrity as part of the National Parks System. In addition, approximately 1,500 acres have been set aside near Hohenwald for future construction of a state park.

German-Swiss immigrants founded Hohenwald in or about 1883, settling both the town and outlying rural areas. These industrious folk quickly parceled the area into 40-acre farms.

The town was laid out with similar precision. The streets, 60 to 80 feet wide, remain today as surveyed by the original settlers. Late September is the time for the sanctioned annual Volks March, a celebration of the town's heritage.

The German-Swiss influence is still much in evidence in the hard-working, conscientious people who are proud to be residents of Lewis County.

The City of Hohenwald has developed three industrial parksites totaling 175 acres, with city water, sewer, gas, fire protection, etc. AII are within the city limits and border a railroad line. Lewis County is served by five truck lines, one of which has its headquarters terminal facilities in Hohenwald.
